WASHTENAW COUNTY, MI – For eight months, an internal Washtenaw County committee composed of a cross-section of academics and community leaders has been quietly studying the long-term effects of one of America’s foundational evils, the institution of slavery.
Washtenaw County Racial Equity Officer Alize Asberry Payne convened the Exploratory Committee on Reparations in June of last year, joining a small but growing number of localities across the country with similar initiatives.
